"Munch Market" at Glasgow Caledonian University

Our Munch Market, held at Glasgow Caledonian University in October, was a great chance to taste your way round some of Scotland’s best street food!  From the well-established to the newer traders… We caught up with them all to find out a bit more about them.

Mimi’s Bakehouse

When and how did you start? It’s actually our 10-year anniversary in November!  We started off with a shop in Leith and now have 4 shops in Edinburgh plus our events van.

What’s your favourite thing about the street food industry? The feeling of accomplishment after a hectic day!  We also love the variety of working in this industry, going to lots of different events and meeting different traders and customers.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I would have to say ostrich steak which I tried in South Africa, although it did taste quite similar to beef.

Lost Bothy

When and how did you start? We’ve been running about a year and a half.  We started with Bruadair street food in a gazebo, made the money to get a trailer and re-branded as Lost Bothy.

What’s your favourite thing about the street food industry? It’s great not being in a kitchen all the time, meaning you get a chance to chat to people as well as cook for them.

What would your Desert Island Dish be? I would go classic with mince and tatties.

The Pakora Explorer

When and how did you start? I was having a mid-life crisis and it was cheaper than buying a sports car!  We started making our spice blends in March this year, then in July we started doing the food.

What’s your favourite thing about the street food industry? All the traders are so friendly and help each other out – it’s a great community.  I love cooking and seeing people’s reactions to trying my food.  It’s great being able to work with my mum and dad and I definitely couldn’t do it without their help.

What’s your favourite meal you’ve ever had? It’s my mum’s tandoori chicken which she cooks me every year for my birthday.  If I could turn it into a street food concept I would!

Delightfully Delicious

When and how did you start? I was working as a property surveyor but realised that life is too short not to do something that you’re passionate about.  I thought of starting a café but decided it was easier for me to start mobile, so did that in May this year.

What’s your favourite thing about the street food industry?

I love the atmosphere at events and meeting other traders.  It’s such a friendly and relaxed community to be a part of.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I had a pizza at the Yard in Perth with wild boar, black pudding, homegrown apples and honey – it sounds so weird but it worked so well!

Truckle and Loaf

When and how did you start?  We love going to events like the Big Feed as customers and thought London was way ahead in terms of street food, so we looked for a gap in the market and decided toasties were a great idea, starting in summer last year.

What’s your favourite thing about the street food industry?  There’s always a good buzz at events and it’s so friendly between both customers and traders.

What would your Desert Island Dish be? We both love seafood – scallops, chilli crab from Singapore - Asian street food is great and anything from Crabshakk in Glasgow is always a winner!

Luti’s Artisan Food

When and how did you start? We started around 2 years ago - my friend was an award-winning chef who’d had enough of working in kitchens so roped me in and from there we started Luti’s!

What’s your favourite thing about the street food industry?  We love buying in the products each morning, changing it up every day and making sure we don’t waste anything.  Everything we use is locally sourced.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this? I’d be stuck in a hot sweaty kitchen, being bossed around!
